ELMHURST – Dr. Mary Ann Malloy was recently recognized for her distinguished career as a physician and for being a pioneer in cardiology and a forward-thinking woman who is a nationally renowned expert in the field of women’s heart health. Dr. Malloy was honored during Trinity High School’s Bal Dominique 2010, held on April 17 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago.

Dr. Malloy, a partner at the Elmhurst Clinic and member of the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Medical Staff, graduated at the top of her class from Trinity High School in River Forest and continued her education at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She matriculated to Northwestern Medical School where she was one of only eight women in a class of 130.

Throughout a medical career that has spanned more than 30 years, Dr. Malloy has been an advocate for women and their health. From her fellowships at Northwestern and Loyola, her faculty appointment at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, her tenure as President of the American Heart Association Metropolitan Board, her founding and chairing of the Woman and Heart Disease Committee in Chicago and serving as president of that Women’s Council, she has displayed a dedication to raising greater awareness of women’s health issues. For close to 19 years, Dr. Malloy has used the power of the media to help deliver her vital message to millions of women and their families through the NBC Channel 5 segment, Living Well. As the television station’s longest running contributor, Dr. Malloy has also appeared on various national media outlets such as CNN, the Today Show and Dateline NBC. She has also been a contributor to national publications such as Time, Reader’s Digest, Harper’s Bazaar, Prevention and Fitness.

Dr. Malloy has furthered her commitment to promoting health and well-being by serving as co-chair of the campaign for the new Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, which is scheduled to open in summer 2011, and recently agreeing to chair the philanthropy committee of the new Health and Fitness Initiative at Trinity. Under her leadership, the school aims to open a health center designed exclusively for women this year, thus creating a culture of strength for the entire student body and impacting the health of young women today and tomorrow.

“I would like to thank Trinity for the honor of receiving the Leadership Award,” Dr. Malloy said. “I am very lucky to have a Trinity High School education and am lucky to be able to see how Trinity has developed, evolved and flourished. My special interest currently is the new Trinity High School Initiative which, when completed, will give each Trinity student a four-year health and fitness plan. How complete their education will be as each student will not only be educated intellectually and spiritually, but will also be educated so they will be able to live a healthy and fruitful life.”

“Dr. Mary Ann Malloy, our esteemed Trinity High School Alum, is truly a bold, pioneering woman,” added Sister Michelle Germanson, President of Trinity High School. “Mary Ann became a physician at a time when a woman in that profession was out of the norm. Believing and knowing in herself and taking a leadership stance on health issues for women was a natural progression in naming her as chair of Trinity High School’s Health and Fitness Initiative.”
