History of General Surgery
In the earlier part of the last century, there were only two types of specialist doctors. Physicians treated medical conditions through the use of medication while surgeons operated on the body part to repair or remove it. As medical knowledge increased, some surgeons became more specialized in specific areas of the body.
The methods of treatment practiced by a general surgeon vary somewhat depending on the needs of patients in the community and the background skills of the surgeon. General surgeons in most communities perform:
- Gastrointestinal operations (including operations on the liver and spleen)
- Breast operations for benign and malignant disease processes
- Anorectal operations (hemorrhoidectomy)
- Laparoscopic and open operations for hernia, gallbladder and other abdominal conditions
- Operation and treatment of varicose veins
General surgeons are usually called upon to provide either direct care or coordination of sub-specialty care for multiply injured patients (for example, blunt trauma or penetrating trauma).
