What is Nephrology?
Nephrology is the medical subspecialty that deals with the kidneys, especially their functions and diseases. The term “nephrology” is derived from the Greek word for kidney, “nephros.” Another term commonly used in reference to the kidney is “renal,” as in “renal failure.” This term is derived from the Latin for kidney, “renes.”
What is a Nephrologist?
A nephrologist — often called a renal physician — is a specialist in internal medicine who has received additional training in the medical treatment of patients with kidney diseases. The training qualifies the nephrologist to treat kidney diseases in a comprehensive way, since the diseases of the kidney may affect the function of other body organs. Nephrologists may consult with patients for short-term illnesses, such as for a kidney biopsy, or they may serve as a primary physician for patients who have long-term kidney problems or who are on dialysis.
