What Does a Pediatrician Do?

A pediatrician specializes in the health and treatment of infants through adolescence. They aid in diagnosing illnesses; prescribe medications; counsel families; monitor children’s physical, mental and social development; and advise adolescents on a range of emotional and social issues. Pediatricians also can participate in research to help benefit all children and public education, such as providing guidelines for safe participation in athletics.

It is important to be selective in finding the right pediatrician to care for your family. You should begin looking for a pediatrician before your baby is due so they can examine the newborn shortly after birth. In addition, new parents should feel comfortable with the physician who will be giving them important advice and medical care for their precious child.

A pediatrician should be warm, compassionate, open to your thoughts and feelings and share similar views. And keep in mind that a pediatrician isn't just for sick kids. You'll visit the baby’s doctor at least six to eight times in the first year for checkups, growth and development assessments, vaccinations, blood work, lead tests and discussions about eating habits and sleep strategies.
