What is Urology?

Urology is a surgical specialty that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Although urology is classified as a surgical specialty, knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and other specialties is required by the urologist because of the wide variety of clinical problems.

The urologists at the Elmhurst Clinic are trained to take care of urinary tract problems in adult males and females as well as children. Some examples of these problems are urinary tract stones; bladder, kidney or prostate infections; and bladder, kidney or prostate cancer. The urologists also handle problems of urinary incontinence/urinary leakage and treat problems of male infertility or any other problems related to male genital organs, including erectile dysfunction/impotence.
